A pelvic exam is a routine procedure performed by healthcare providers to evaluate the health of a person’s reproductive organs. While it can be a slightly uncomfortable or nerve-wracking experience, it is important for maintaining your health and wellness. During the pelvic exam, the healthcare provider will ask you some questions about the patient’s medical history or symptoms you may be experiencing.
It’s an important way to monitor your reproductive health and detect any potential issues early on. Read on to learn more.
The Importance of Pelvic Exams
A pelvic exam is a vital part of women’s healthcare, primarily focusing on the uterus, ovaries, and cervix. This exam is performed to monitor and evaluate overall gynecological health, detect potential issues, and screen for conditions like cervical cancer, STIs, and reproductive disorders.
Procedure Overview
Preparation:
Prior to the exam, it’s advisable to schedule the appointment during a time when you’re not menstruating, as blood can interfere with the examination. You may be instructed to empty your bladder before the exam as well.
Clothing:
You’ll be given a gown to change into, which will allow easy access to the exam while maintaining your privacy.
Positioning:
During the exam, you’ll lie down on an examination table. This position allows the healthcare provider to perform the examination with ease.
External Exam:
The exam typically begins with an external examination, where the healthcare provider checks the area around the vulva for any abnormalities, such as skin conditions or signs of infection.
Speculum Insertion:
A speculum, a device that resembles a duckbill, is gently inserted into the vagina to widen it.
Cervical Examination:
The provider uses a small brush to gather cells from the cervix for a Pap smear or cervical cancer screening. This involves a gentle scraping of the cervix’s surface to obtain a sample.
Bimanual Examination:
With the speculum still in place, the doctor may perform the exam biannually. This involves inserting assessing your vagina while placing the other hand on your lower abdomen to feel for any abnormalities, such as masses or tenderness. This part of the exam evaluates the size, shape, and positioning of the reproductive organs.
Speculum Removal:
Once the necessary examinations are completed, the speculum is carefully removed, and the healthcare provider will assess your comfort.
Discussion:
After the exam, your doctor will discuss the results with you. They may offer recommendations, answer your questions, and provide guidance on maintaining your reproductive health.
